Burke family papers 1773-1874.

This collection consists of deeds, plats, and surveys for land in St. Matthews' Parish (now Effingham County) Effingham and Screven counties in Georgia. Family names on the papers include Barber, Boyett, Brinson, Burke, Dixon, Faircloth, Foster, Hendrix, Lee, Marlow Mitchiner, Mills, Rogers, and Wade Also included is a receipt from Simeon Burke to Edward and Sarah Foy dated January 18, 1874. Of special interest are General Orders to Draft Locals (General Orders No. 23) dated January 8, 1865, drafted under the command of General G. W. Smith and signed by E. Winship. Corporal Winship was in the Georgia Cavalry, 8th Batallion (States Guards), Company A. The papers in this collection date from 1773 to 1874. Property records are arranged alphabetically by county and then chronologically. Other items are listed in chronological order at the end of the inventory.

David Burke settled in Screven County, Georgia, around 1800. He and his wife Martha had nine children. The deeds, plats, and surveys in this collection document land owned by the Burke family in Effingham and Screven counties. Landowners represented in the papers include David Burke, his son Simeon Burke, and Adam Brinson, who was possibly Davis Burke's son-in-law.
