The United States Sanitary Commission (USSC) was a private relief agency created by federal legislation on June 18, 1861, to support sick and wounded soldiers of the United States Army (Federal / Northern / Union Army) during the American Civil War. Built in 1873, the Colin C. Baker was a 3-masted schooner partially owned and captained by Browning K. Baker of West Dennis (Mass.). John Bent was born in Paris, Maine and later moved to Boston, Mass. with his father, a printer. During the Civil War, Bent was a member of the U.S. Sanitary Commission. Towards the end of the diary he describes giving aid to members of the 4th Regiment Massachusetts Cavalry whose members had suffered casualties in a battle with the Confederates.
