Arthur M. Byers attended Central High School in Philadelphia, PA. He was a member on the Class of '99. His instructor in Chemistry was Harry F. Keller (1861-1924). Keller taught at Central High School from 1892 to 1915 and co-authored Laboratory Experiments in General Chemistry, a popular textbook of the day with Edgar Fahs Smith. From the description of The A. A.M. Byers established the A.M. Byers Company in Pittsburgh making rod-iron pipes and was responsible for innovations in iron production control. In 1864, he established a business in the Southside area of Pittsburgh making rod-iron pipes. Originally the Graff, Byers Company, it was renamed the A.M. Byers Company in 1876.
