It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Art educator and administrator Nancy Stuart began her career at RIT in 1984 as an assistant professor in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. Prior to coming to RIT she was on the faculty of the Photo Technology Program at Lansing Community College in Lansing, Michigan. She was elected to chair the Applied Photogarphy Department in 1991.
