John S. Martin letter, 1866 Apr. 27.

Rev. John S. Martin in New Orleans writes to his wife, Susan P. Martin, in Bladensburg, Md., discussing family illnesses and worry over epidemic diseases in the North. He describes events at a Methodist Episcopal Church, South convention he is attending, mentioning the election of several bishops, including Dr. William May Wightman of South Carolina.

Methodist clergyman. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Wightman in 1840 became the editor of the "Southern Christian Advocate," a weekly newspaper devoted to the activities of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the South.
