Pioneer Catholic prelate. Born in Galicia, Spain, he arrived in WA in 1846 and subsequently established a Benedictine monastery at New Norcia as the centre of a mission to the Aborigines. In 1867, Pope Pius IX constituted the monastery as an abbey nullius dioecesis with Dom Salvado as perpetual abbot and bishop.
