Hartmann was born in Hungary, but emigrated as a child to the United States. He began a career as a concert violinist while still a child in 1887. During his career he was very active in the promotion of new music and so developed a wide correspondence with many important composers. Claude Debussy (b. 22 August 1862–d. 25 March 1918) was one of the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France he attended the Conservatoire de Paris originally to study piano before switing to composition. His orchestral works include Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), Nocturnes (1897–1899), Images (1905–1912). In 1904 he rose to international fame for his opera Pelléas et Mélisande.
