J.W. Gitt papers, 1929-1977.

This collection consists of photocopies of the correspondence of Josiah W. Gitt (1929-1947), plus a variety of related materials, such as: clippings from the York Gazette and Daily; files related to Henry Wallace, congressional campaigns, and Supreme Court matters; three published speeches of others; selected essays, pamphlets, bulletins, and journal articles; and a copy of the 1975 book J. W. Gitt's Sweet Land of Liberty compiled and edited by Gitt's longtime assistant, McKinley C. Olson. This collection provides unique primary sources on post-World War II politics and progressive publishing, and documents some of Josiah Gitt's contributions to freedom of the press.

Progressive journalist Josiah William Gitt (1884-1973) published the nationally known progressive newspaper The Gazette and Daily (York, Pa.), from 1918 until his death in 1973.
