Thanking him and Mrs. Carpenter for the package of cottons and linens sent to Mrs. Scott; looking forward to Mrs. Carpenter's arrival in England; discussing the war and fearing that "while Bonaparte lives & reigns peace is hardly to be hoped for;" mentioning the good health of his family and of his son Charles (Carpenter's godson) in particular; reporting that the Prince Regent offered Scott the Poet Laureateship, but that he turned it down; hoping that Mrs. Carpenter received a book that he had sent to her.
