The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Off Campus Student Association (OCSA) first appears in Techmila, RIT's yearbook, in 1988. The group was formed to serve the needs of RIT's commuter population. Prior to this, the RIT Commuter Association filled this role. OCSA provided commuters with access to resources such as lockers and on-campus kitchens, planned functions such as lectures and trips, and brought commuter student concerns to the attention of RIT's administration. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute.
