Gouverneur Morris autograph letter to Peter van Schaack, 1778 Sept. 8.

Morris discusses his sentiments regarding the American Revolution. Van Schaak was apparently leaving America due to his Tory sympathies. Morris explains his own sympathies: "Could the American contest have been decided without Blood I should have been happy. While the appeal lay to reason, I reasoned; when it was made to the Sword I thought it my duty to join in the great issue. While Reconciliation appeared practicable I labored for Reconciliation. When the breach was so widened that no hope remained of cure I solemnly pledged my Faith to support the Independence of my Country which had then become essential to her Liberties..., I will continue in public life till the establishment of the Liberties of America ..."
