Johannes Gutenberg was born in Mainz, Germany sometime between 1394 and 1404. He is best known for the invention of the moveable type printing press which ushered in the modern period of human history. Prior to his invention, Gutenberg lived in Strasbourg and appears to have been a goldsmith member enrolled in the Strasbourg militia. The museum is dedicated to the history of Belgian printing and particularly the 16th century printer Christophe Plantin whose business was continued by his descendants, including his son-in-law Jan Moretus. In 1876 Edouard Moretus sold the press and all its equipment to the city of Antwerp. A year later, in 1877, one could visit the print shop and adjoining house.
