David Gardiner Phillips and William Little Phillips papers, 1845-1937.

This collection consists of letters, poems, a resolution, sermons, and speeches of Rev. David Gardiner Phillips and his son, Judge William Little Phillips. Folders 1 and 2 contain Rev. David Gardiner Phillips' sermons, letters, a resolution, and speeches dating from 1845 to 1898. Folder 3 contains three speeches by Judge William Little Phillips' (1876-1919), a book of transcribed poems written by William (1998-1933), and a memorial of William written by Rufus G. Price upon his death in 1937. Collection materials date from 1845-1937. The collection was donated in memory of W.W. Abbot, III a descendent of Rev. David Gardiner Phillips.

Rev. David Gardiner Phillips was born in Salisbury, North Carolina on 1 February 1817. He graduated from Erskine College of Due West, South Carolina and moved to Louisville, Georgia where he was a distinguished clergyman of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church. He first married Mary Isabella Hearst in 1849 and they had one child, John Hearst Philips, who was less than one month old when he died on 16 March 1851.
