The bulk of the collection consists of personal, official, private and subject related correspondence, both letters sent and received, that span the years 1936-2003. The official correspondence deals with naval billets, awards, assignments, and personnel. Personal correspondence focuses on household matters, and financial concerns. Private correspondence deals with naval career matters, and subject related correspondence focuses on submarines, NROTC, Naval War College and the Joint Intelligence Group; Miscellany includes news clippings, rosters, programs, newsletters, lists and booklets. Folio items are maps, charts, prints, and newspapers, 1951-1988.

Ralph M. Metcalf was born on June 22,1913 in Greenfield, IL and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1935. He served in cruisers and battleships until World War II when he commanded submarines USS Pogy, USS Loggerhead and USS Greenfish. From 1947-1950 he was EXO of Naval ROTC unit in Madison, WI. He graduated from the Naval War College in 1954, then joined the Joint Staff Intelligence Group later that year. He retired from the Navy as Commander, Submarine Squadron Three, Pacific in 1957.
