Metcalf, Ralph M., 1913-2008
Variant namesRalph M. Metcalf was born on June 22,1913 in Greenfield, IL and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1935. He served in cruisers and battleships until World War II when he commanded submarines USS Pogy, USS Loggerhead and USS Greenfish. From 1947-1950 he was EXO of Naval ROTC unit in Madison, WI. He graduated from the Naval War College in 1954, then joined the Joint Staff Intelligence Group later that year. He retired from the Navy as Commander, Submarine Squadron Three, Pacific in 1957. He joined the Lockheed Corporation in 1957 where he worked on the Polaris project. He retired from Lockheed in 1978 and joined Paine Webber Investment firm, retiring from there in 1996. Metcalf died in Saratoga, California in 2006.
