Holograph signed. Letter, apparently sent concurrently with vouchers for his expenses in France, in which Adams laments that "public Characters," to gain "Popularity as well as Power" in order to do good, must avoid "Fame and Fortune." Accompanied by typewritten transcript and b&w copy of a portrait of Adams, also donated by Sang.

Elbridge Thomas Gerry (July 17, 1744 (OS July 6, 1744) – November 23, 1814) was an American politician and diplomat.
