Box 1 contains a scrapbook that encompasses Robert Springsteen's life from childhood to the 1970s. Among the items in the scrapbook are photographs and materials related to his school days and military service. The papers in box 2 focus on his activities as an agent for the OSS and the CIA. It includes documents, orders, correspondence, his OSS training, and his activities with agents in Europe in WWII. The CIA related items include his trip to the Far East in 1954, and correspondence with administrators regarding the recruitment of potential agents from Valparaiso University students from 1951 to 1969.

Robert Springsteen (b. 1918) was born and raised in Harvard, Illinois. He graduated from Valparaiso University in 1940 with a business degree. In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) where he worked in the financial aspect of the operation.
