Robert Springsteen (b. 1918) was born and raised in Harvard, Illinois. He graduated from Valparaiso University in 1940 with a business degree. In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) where he worked in the financial aspect of the operation. After the war he returned to Valparaiso and worked in the university's financial department until his retirement. From 1951 he was also employed by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). At first his job was similar to his duties with the OSS but after 1956 he screened and recruited potential agents from the students at Valpariaso University.
