Describing his pleasurable journey to Ireland; praising the country at length and musing that it "has certainly the capability of becoming perhaps the finest portion of the Empire," mentioning that all it seems to want "is the proper direction of a spirit of industry;" discussing some precautions they took for safety while there; praising the hospitality of her brother Colonel Gore; mentioning that Lockhart has been offered the post of Conductor of the Quarterly Review and regretting that this means he and Sophia will move to London; noting that Walter has been appointed Aide de Camp to Lord Wellsley; mentioning a visit by Mrs. Coutts and her suitor the Duke of St. Albans.
