Sending his condolences on the death of [Lady Jane Gordon]; remarking that the use of ice has proven successful in "arresting the progress of blood to the heart" and mentioning that his ice stores have recently saved two friends; regretting to hear she is leaving England; discussing Byron's final verses; mentioning some intended visitors; mentioning the unexpected arrival of his son Walter and describing his wild appearance; referencing the recent deaths of the King and Queen of Hawaii; reporting that the King has ordered Wilkie to paint Scott into a "large picture he is painting for his Majesty of his reception at Holyrood."
