Autograph letter signed : Edinburgh, to the Marchioness of Abercorn, 1814 Nov. 22.

Apologizing for his silence, saying that it "would have been long since broken had it been either easy or useful to write up occurrences which have since happened & in which your Ladyship will not doubt my deep & sincere sympathy;" saying that his own life "has been drained away as usual in business literary labour & lounging about;" describing a trip he took that summer to the Orkneys, western Islands, and coast of Ireland, regretting only that they did not make it to St.Kilda; reporting that this trip was primarily for collecting materials to improve a poem he has long been working on called the Lord of the Isles; noting that he has finished his work on Swift and regretting that he was unable to send her a copy; mentioning the general improvement to Abbotsford.
