Reporting that he was surprised by the offer of the poet laureateship and discussing his reasons for refusing the post, citing primarily his fear of overburdening himself "with the regular discharge of a constant and recurring poetical commemoration;" asking her to circulate his sentiments lest his motives for refusing the post be misconstrued by society.
