Sgt. Leonard Martin discusses his experiences at Fort Benning in the late 1930s and early 1940s, including recruit drill, training with horses, horse shows, facilities and conditions, expansion, the Campbell King Bowl (a horse show bowl), the 24th Infantry (an African-American unit), the composition of the 83rd Field Artillery unit, and the organization of the Airborne. He also talks about preparing for a planned visit by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which never took place, and seeing General Patton and President Eisenhower at Fort Benning. He also describes his social activities in Columbus, Ga. and Phenix City, Ala. and some of the nightclubs in Phenix City that many soldiers frequented during Phenix City's heyday as a center of gambling, organized crime, vice, and corruption.

Leonard Martin was born in 1914 in Wedowee, Ala. He enlisted in the Army in 1934 and was shipped to Fort Benning, where he served in the 83rd Field Artillery (one of the last horse-drawn units in the Army) until 1940, when he enlisted in the 4th Division, 29th Field Artillery.
