Frank Rowe papers, 1946-1986 (bulk 1970s-1980s).

The Frank Rowe papers contain correspondence, legal files, newspaper clippings, flyers, writings and other materials concerning Rowe's dismissal from teaching at San Francisco State University in 1950 due to his non-compliance with the Levering loyalty oath. The papers document his ensuing legal battle for reinstatement and monetary compensation as well as the history of the Levering loyalty oath. Also included is documentation and correspondence about his book, "The Enemy Among Us," a personal account of the Levering loyalty oath. Other writings include an article written about the Port Chicago Mutiny and editorials. The collection contains many newspaper clippings about Rowe, personal papers, papers regarding teaching materials and artist notebooks kept by Rowe (mostly from the 1970s-1980s).

Frank Rowe was a first-year art teacher when, along with a small group of colleagues, he was fired by San Francisco State College in 1950 for refusing to sign California's new anti-communist loyalty oath, the Levering Act. Rowe was barred from teaching from 1950 until the California Supreme Court overturned the oath in 1967. His book The Enemy Among Us: A Story of Witch-hunting in the McCarthy Era was published in 1980. Rowe also taught at Laney College in Oakland, Calif. Frank Rowe died in 1985...
