The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The State College/University Park location held a two-stage conference and related events by five Centre County regional organizations. Janis Jacobs graduated from Colorado State University (1977), and the University of Michigan (M.A., 1983; Ph.D. psychology, 1987). She served on the University of Nebraska faculty for 15 years, coming to Penn State in 1996. She soon moved to the position of vice president for administration (1999), vice provost for undergraduate education (2002), and vice president and dean for undergraduate education (2005).
