Moreland discusses his family and the conservative culture of Fort Smith, Arkansas; the American buildup for the Vietnam War; the history and politics behind the war, especially Chinese influence in the region; the poor performance of the South Vietnamese Army; American and North Vietnamese operations in Laos; corruption and inefficiency in the American war effort; Marine Corps military intelligence; and his general appraisal of the war.

Jackie Moreland grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and attended Southern Methodist College in 1962. He withdrew after being injured in football and entered the Marine Corps. He went to intelligence school for training in information gathering, cartography, and linguistics.
