Autograph letter signed with initials : Edinburgh, to George Ellis, 1805 Feb. 6.

Thanking him for forwarding Frere's "flattering approbation" regarding Sir Tristrem, saying he would "rather have his suffrage than that of a whole synod of your vulgar antiquaries." Discussing the difficulty of proving historical facts related to medieval romances, and criticizing the Welsh antiquaries who attempt to do so. Asking whether the lay (of the last minstrel) has arrived; referencing Ellis's future contributions to the Edinburgh Review and discussing the magazine; saying he has very little domestic news to send, but noting that they will remove to Reged in about a month and looking forward to Ellis's visit to Scotland.
