Autograph letter signed : Laswade Cottage, near Edinburgh, to George Ellis, 1803 Aug. 27.

Apologizing for his delay in responding, saying he has been occupied with the militia. Discussing at length Thomas the Rhymer's name and the tradition of inheriting surnames, and asserting that this Thomas is the same as the Tomas in Douce's manuscript. Reporting that he recently met a man from Cornwall named Caerlion, and discussing the possible origin of that name, asserting that it may be Castrum Leonense, "which in every romance is stated to have been Tristrem's country."
