Records of William Clark & other superintendents, agents, and sub agents, 1807-1855, including correspondence, accounts, journals, and other records of the Missouri (1812-21), St. Louis (1821-51) and Central (1851-55) superintendencies under the leadership of Superintendents Clark, Joshua Pilcher, David D. Mitchell, Thomas H. Harvey, and Alfred Cumming. The collection also includes records of the Missouri Fur Company, 1812-1817, of which Clark served as a director. Also known as the William Clark papers. Superintendency records include claims, 1807-1830; licenses & permits, 1813-1825; correspondence, 1813-1855; descriptions, 1815-1817; accounts, 1822-1853; journals, 1826-1835; field notes & plats of Indian lands, 1830-1836; treaties & agreements between the United States & various tribes, 1831-1838; correspondence registers, 1837-1839; and property returns, 1840-1853, of the Missouri, St. Louis, and Central superintendencies of Indian affairs. The records contain information on Indian relocation, treaties, the fur trade & fur companies, claims, Indian education, killings, roads, employees, meteorology, smallpox, steamboats, surveys, and trading posts. Indian agencies represented in the superintendency records include the Osage, Sac & Fox, St. Peters, Upper Missouri River, and others. Indian nations include the Arapaho, Arikara, Delaware, Fox, Illinois, Iowa, Kansa, Kickapoo, Mandan, Menominee, Omaha, Osage, Oto, Ottawa, Pawnee, Peoria, Piankashaw, Potawatomi, Sauk, Seneca, Shawnee, and Winnebago. Correspondents include Nicholas Boilvin, Henry C. Brish, P.L. Chouteau, William Clark, Alfred Cumming, Marmaduke S. Davenport, John Dougherty, Thomas Forsyth, Richard Graham, Thomas H. Harvey, John Francis Hamtramck, Augustin Kennerly, George H. Kennerly, James Latham, Alexander McNair, G. Maguire, Pierre Menard, D.D. Mitchell, Joshua Pilcher, Felix Saint Vrain, John F.A. Alfred Cummings was the second governor of Utah territory. He was appointed right after the “Utah War” and, due to exaggerated reports, expected to walk into a tense situation, if not outright rebellion.
