Schmidt family papers, 1816-1969.

This collection consists of family papers of Gustavus Schmidt and his son Charles E. Schmidt, prominent nineteenth-century lawyers in New Orleans, La., and papers of their descendants. Included are correspondence, legal and financial documents, insurance policies, a passport, property records, diaries, family photographs created in New Orleans studios, newspaper clippings and other printed items. These papers include accounts of law cases concerning successions of French citizens whose land was confiscated during the Civil War.

Gustavus Schmidt was a New Orleans attorney. His sons, Charles E. Schmidt and Albert J. Schmidt, both enlisted as Confederate soldiers. Charles Schmidt enlisted in the Crescent Regiment, Louisiana Infantry. Albert Schmidt served as a private in the Ascension Cannoniers, Louisiana Artillery. Gustavus Schmidt (1795-1877) was a New Orleans lawyer and author of several works on civil law, and a lecturer at the University of Louisiana, an earlier name of Tulane University. As a young man, he emigrated from Sweden, settled in New Orleans, and married Melanie Seghers. His son, Charles Edouard Schmidt (1832-1891), also a lawyer, married Leda Hincks.
