Letters from Merriam to his mother Achsah O. Merriam and his wife Lucie White Merriam, whom he married November 10, 1864, discuss his experiences at Memphis, Tennesse; during the Red River Campaign; at the Battle of Nashville; and in Alabama. Includes a number of letters from Lucie to Merriam both before and after their marriage.

A native of Vermont, Merriam moved with his family to Illinois in 1836. They settled in Tazewell County in 1841. Merriam enlisted as lieutenant colonel of the 117th Illinois Infantry on September 19, 1862 and was mustered out August 5, 1865.
