A native of Bessemer, Michigan, Margaret Holley Chapman grew up in Lake Linden and graduated from Calumet High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lawrence College in 1932 and went on to attend Michigan College of Mining and Technology, becoming the first female to receive a degree from the college. George P. Schubert was born in 1883 in Houghton, Michigan. His initial schooling took place in Osceola Township at Mason. Later he attended grade school and high school in Lake Linden before enrolling at the Michigan College of Mines (now Michigan Technological University). He received his engineer of mines degree from the college and began a teaching career at the College, which, on his resignation, totaled 29 years.
