Studies for silver work / Hillbom, 1903-1933.

Drawings for silverwork in pencil or ink, some highlighted with gouache and/or enhanced with monochrome wash; two executed in full watercolor. The sketchbook leaves are of various paper stocks. Some designs are glued to the sketchbook leaves; a few of these are reproductions. Only three drawings are dated: May 25th 03; 5-5-11; 10-25-'26; 3-6-'33. The sketchbook is partially annotated, in English, with measurements given in non-metric terms. Designs include numerous flatware pieces, individual vases, serving bowls, coffee- and teapots, and trophies. Highlights are: a presentation sword in full color, with gold letters, spelling the name "Byrd," incorporated in the guard, possibly referring to Richard Evelyn Byrd in honor of his Antarctic expeditions; a golf trophy in full color, intended to stand 5 1/2 ft. high; five leaves of pencil drawings for a Louisiana Knights Templar competitive drill trophy, New Orleans, Apr. 21-24, 1922; four leaves of detailed renderings of flowers. In addition to the silver designs there is a reproduction of an ex libris Alex. Engblom, dated 1919.
