Meek family papers, 1855-1948.

Meek family papers, consisting of 5 manuscripts (1946, 1955, and undated); autograph album (1855-1896); scrapbook (1903-1945); photograph album (ca. 1870s - 1890s); and 32 photographs (1889-1948 and undated). Autograph album, 1855-1896, belonging to Marie L. Cannon contains poems, calling cards, and pressings from friends at Columbus (Miss.) Female Institute. Cannon later gave the album to her daughter, Alice. A scrapbook, 1903-1945, contains clippings, photographs, and ephemera compiled by Carrie Meek Sessums on Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) and United Daughters of the Confederacy (U.D.C.) topics, family news, and items of interest. Christmas card and a letter, 15 Jan. 1955, are both addressed to Seth [Meek] from South Carolina Governor James F. Byrnes. The letter thanks Seth for his work on the Water Policy Committee and his friendship. The other manuscript items were written by Carrie Meek Sessums: two for a meeting of the U.D.C. and another as a memorial for Mrs. Lucinda Dickson Terry who died in 1903. Thirty photographs and a carte-de-visite album, ca. 1870s-1948, are the bulk of the collection and are mostly unidentified. Among the identified are A.B. Meek (1889), Wallie (1895), Sam (1894 and 1897), Marguerite (1891), George Perkins Cox, Alice, and Elizabeth. Garner Photo Co. in Columbus, Miss., photographed Seth-s dog Jack in 1898. In addition to studio portraits, there are photographs of the first Columbus street car run in 1906, the Baraca Class of First Baptist Church in 1916, the Mississippi D.A.R. state conference in 1926 by Pruitt Photo, and a Hebard wagon. One photograph of note was taken by Jimmy Price in Columbia, S.C., on 12 Jan. 1948 showing S[eth] A. Meek of Newberry, S.C., W.R. Belfield, G.M. Nolen and E.R. Oliver of Southern Railway, R.E.
