Includes ca. 60 items, October-November 1871, relating to the Great Chicago Fire, while Mason was mayor, including letters (2) and proclamation by General Sheridan, proclamations by Mason, and letters from the mayors of other cities. Also present are materials on Mason's railroad and other business ventures, 1833-1956; list of number of passengers transported on the main line and Galena branch by the Illinois Central Railroad (1855); expense record for moving a house (1855); items of Harriet Lavinia Hopkins Mason and Alice L. Mason; letters of Henry B. Mason, Edward G. Mason and members of the Trowbridge family (ca. 1880s-early 1920s); and genealogical materials about the Mason family and Howell family and family associations with the town of Cheshire (Mass.).

George Coffin Taylor was born in Charleston, S.C., in 1877. He was a gentleman farmer, lawyer, and Shakespeare scholar. He served for twenty-seven years on the faculty of the English Department at the University of North Carolina until retiring in 1949 to Columbia, S.C. Coffin died in 1961.
