George Coffin Taylor was born in Charleston, S.C., in 1877. He was a gentleman farmer, lawyer, and Shakespeare scholar. Taylor completed his undergraduate degree at University of South Carolina, and attended Harvard University for his MA and received his PhD in 1906 from the University of Chicago while teaching at the University of Colorado. He served for 27 years on the faculty of the English Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until his retirement in 1949, when he settled in Columbia, S.C.
