Administrative files, meeting minutes, research files, correspondence, newspaper articles, and other records of the Illinois Labor History Society (ILHS), which was formed in 1969 to promote and assist awareness of labor history. Included are fliers and correspondence from society and labor-related events, issues of the society's newsletter Reporter (1975-1988), and the papers of Les Orear, ILHS president, including information on running political action groups and a report titled History of the Chicago Printing Pressmen's Union No. 7's Struggle for Manning of Presses and Comparison of the Accomplishments to Other Cities. Most of the research files are on school integration, including newspaper clippings, booklets, pamphlets, reports, meeting minutes, correspondence, and conference materials from the National Conference on Negro History (1966) held by the American Federation of Teachers and from the Education vs. Racism Conference (1968). Also included are newspaper clippings, meeting minutes, correspondence, and reports from the Chicago Teachers' Union, and materials from the World Parliament of the Peoples for Peace (1980), such as petitions, reports, newsletters, and speech transcripts.

Joyce Wheeler was a member of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), a national teachers' labor union founded in 1900. She was particularly active in the United Action Caucus (UAC), a rank and file organization within the AFT. The UAC took stands on various issues within the American educational system, supported progressive politics in general, and campaigned for internal democracy within the AFT.
