Ledgers (23 v.) containing minutes, membership lists, accounts, reports, Commandery decisions, and other records, plus a small amount of correspondence and a few certificates of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States and of its Illinois Commandery. Includes a copy of the agreement (1921 Aug. 26) whereby MOLLUS transferred some books related to the Civil War to the Chicago Historical Society's library. Includes a certificate of thanks issued to the Illinois Commandery for hospitality shown to the 5th quadrennial congress of the Order. Signed by Rutherford B. Hayes as president of the Order. Includes a membership certificate issued to John Charles Carroll, grandson of James A. Mulligan.

Originally an honor guard of officers and ex-officers of the Army and Navy who came together to stand guard over the remains of President Abraham Lincoln. Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and earned degrees from Kenyon College and Harvard Law School before starting a career as a lawyer in Cincinnati. Hayes served as a major general in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1864.
