Philip M. Katz papers, ca. 1960-1970.

Correspondence, educational reports, guidelines for teaching and evaluation, biographical information, newsletters, research files, notes, newspaper clippings, and other papers of Philip M. Katz related to his work with the Chicago (Ill.) public school system, particularly in regards to school desegregation and decentralization. Katz was the principal of several elementary schools in Chicago, including Irving Park School, Ward School, and Lewis-Champlin School, and taught education courses at Chicago Teachers College. The collection also includes materials related to protests, the quality of education, Board of Education house reports on school integration, and reports and correspondence from Superintendent Benjamin Willis. In addition are surveys from University of Chicago sociologist Robert Havighurst, and meeting minutes and correspondence from the Independent Voters of Illinois Education Committee, of which Katz was a member.
