J.L. Barton letter : Buffalo, to the secretary of the Buffalo Historical Society, 1865 Mar. 8.

Letter presenting a document signed by Andrew Jackson to the Buffalo Historical Society. Barton's letter includes "historical remarks" on the events leading up to the Battle of New Orleans. The document, a letter written and signed by Andrew Jackson, directs Gov. William C.C. Claiborne to ready the marine corps and the militia for action. The letter was sent from headquarters of the 7th military district, New Orleans, 21 Dec. 1814. A note on the verso states "This letter was handed to me at 1 o'clock of the morning of the 22d December."

William C. C. Claiborne practiced law in Tennessee and became judge of the Superior Court of Tennessee in 1796. He became governor of the Territory of Mississippi in 1801 and was appointed to receive Louisiana from France in 1803. James L. Barton was born near Geneva, N.Y.; he came to Lewiston with his father in 1807. Engaged in the forwarding business from Lewiston to Buffalo; moved to Buffalo in 1832, where he formed a partnership with Samuel Wilkeson.
