James L. Barton was born near Geneva, N.Y.; he came to Lewiston with his father in 1807. Engaged in the forwarding business from Lewiston to Buffalo; moved to Buffalo in 1832, where he formed a partnership with Samuel Wilkeson. Appointed Niagara County clerk in 1821; continued as Erie County clerk through 1822.
