John Carroll Brent letterbook, 1841-1850 (bulk 1841-1845).

Letterbook containing Brent's outgoing letters from Washington, D.C., Paris, France, Rose Hall, Scotland, and Baltimore, Md., relating to family and business matters, his claims on the office of librarian at the Smithsonian Institution, and his editing of Daniel Brent's biography of Abp. John Carroll (1843). Family correspondents include John Carroll Brent's father, William Brent, his brothers, Henry Johnson Brent and Thomas William Brent, and his cousin, Catharine Rye Douglas. Also includes letters to Robert E. Lee and Brent's business accounts.

Carroll, the first Roman Catholic bishop of the United States and first Archbishop of Baltimore, was born 8 January 1735 in Upper Marlborough, Maryland, to Daniel and Eleanor Carroll. Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
