Papers of William Rufus Shafter, 1862-1904.

Correspondence, sketches, maps, photos, cartoons, clippings, broadsides and other printed material, and other papers chiefly military in nature and predominantly relating to the Spanish American War. Includes some papers relating to Shafter's career in the Civil War and on the Texas frontier, the Congressional Medal of Honor which he was awarded, and the scandal arising from his controversial actions during the Spanish-American War. Also includes letters and memoranda by Shafter concerning relations between the American expeditionary force and the Cuban rebels under García, several Spanish Army documents expressing the Spanish view of American war aims, and Spanish opinions of the Cuban populace. Correspondents include Russell A. Alger, Henry Clark Corbin, George Dewey, Calixto García Iñiguez, William McKinley, Nelson A. Miles, Edward O. C. Ord, Elihu Root, William T. Sampson, and Joseph Wheeler.
