Daniel H. Hamilton case records, 1867-1870.

Records pertain to a sum of money owed by Hamilton and others to the U.S. Government, and his claims for compensation for service as a U.S. marshal. The documents include a letter (1868) from Hamilton in Savannah, Ga., to Charleston attorney Henry E. Young; a letter (1870) from Daniel H. Hamilton, Jr., (b. 1838) in Hillsboro, N.C., to the law firm Rutledge & Young; an explanation of the U.S. Comptroller's suspended account with Hamilton concerning his charge of 17 prisoners "belonging to the crew of the Slaver Brig Echo: viz. Bates et al"; and an account of fees for Hamilton's services and monies paid to Charleston sheriffs for receiving and holding hundreds of Africans from the Echo (a ship originally named the Putnam, and later recommissioned as the privateer Jeff Davis).

Daniel Heyward Hamilton (1816-1868) lived in Summerville, S.C., and later in Savannah, Ga. In 1836 he married Rebecca Motte Middleton. In Aug. 1858, while Hamilton was a U.S. Marshal in South Carolina, the slave ship Echo was captured by the Dolphin, a U.S. brig commissioned to suppress the slave trade.
