Daniel Heyward Hamilton (1816-1868) lived in Summerville, S.C., and later in Savannah, Ga. In 1836 he married Rebecca Motte Middleton. In Aug. 1858, while Hamilton was a U.S. Marshal in South Carolina, the slave ship Echo was captured by the Dolphin, a U.S. brig commissioned to suppress the slave trade. The Echo was brought into the port of Charleston and turned over to sheriffs there. Over 300 Africans on board were later returned to Africa. Hamilton was appointed as the first federal marshal for the Confederate States of America but soon left that post to serve as an officer in the Confederate Army.
