Personal diaries (1878-1917), personal reminiscences, copies of many of Chittenden's reports issued by the U.S. Corps of Engineers, including the series Report ... Yellowstone National Park (1879-1883, 1886-1900), files of his notes on death in Yellowstone Park and three different hold-ups (including first hand accounts) in the park, correspondence (arranged in chronological order), invitations to speak or participate in conferences, announcements of his being elected to boards and honorary membership in various organizations, speeches, research notes, published books, typescript articles reflecting his many interests, including the Panama Canal, war and Peace, Christian Science, and engineering concerns, and other papers. Correspondents include Senator Wesley L. Jones and Robert Underwood Johnson, regarding Canadian reciprocity (1911); inquiries concerning his historical research from Edwin L. Sabin, Katherine Coman, and J. Neilson Barry; David Starr Jordan commenting on Chittenden's article in the Atlantic Monthly about the case against war and other issues of interest from the World Peace Foundation; and Thomas Burke. Much of the original material in the collection published by the repository after receiving it from Chittenden's surviving children in H.M. Chittenden, a western epic, being a selection from his unpublished journals, diaries, and reports (1961).
