Correspondence, account books, diaries, deeds, mortgages, newspapers, leases, land surveys, maps, financial papers, promissory notes, bonds and warrants, papers of Mercer County Orphans' Court, New Jersey Supreme Court, and other state courts, poems, photographs, certificates, and other papers, chiefly of Joseph J. Ely (1813-1895), Hightstown attorney, local historian, Universalist, legislator, and reformer. Also includes papers of Richard Ely (1733-1791); Joseph Ely (1782-1854); Joseph Addison Ely (1847-1927), son of Joseph J. Ely, including account book with J.V. Davison's grocery store, bills and receipts of Hightstown Water Works, articles written by Ely for newspaper publication, and poetry book entitled Ely's Poems (privately printed in 1902); Joseph J. Ely (1869-1951), son of Joseph Addison Ely, including account book recording purchases at Davison's store, funeral notices, tax notices from several municipalities, and papers pertaining to a 1923 New Jersey Supreme Court case in which Ely was involved; and Huldah Ely (1898-1972), teacher and daughter of Joseph J. Ely, including diploma (1920) from New Jersey State Normal School at Trenton and materials relating to her travels and teaching career.

The New Jersey Assembly had similar functions both before and after the American Revolution. In colonial days, the representatives, who were elected by adult white males over the age of 21, were sworn in, and then chose the speaker.
