Eben A. Ayers was born October 4, 1890, in Watertown, New York. From 1908 to 1918 he worked as a journalist in Watertown, New York, and Elizabeth, New Jersey. From 1918 to 1919 he was a field clerk in the U.S. Army. From 1920 to 1936 he worked as a journalist with the Associated Press in New York City, and was the Associated Press bureau chief in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Boston, Massachusetts.
