Ayers, Eben A., 1890-1977
Variant namesEben A. Ayers was born October 4, 1890, in Watertown, New York. From 1908 to 1918 he worked as a journalist in Watertown, New York, and Elizabeth, New Jersey. From 1918 to 1919 he was a field clerk in the U.S. Army. From 1920 to 1936 he worked as a journalist with the Associated Press in New York City, and was the Associated Press bureau chief in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Boston, Massachusetts. From 1936 to 1939 Ayers was the news editor for the Providence Journal in Providence, Rhode Island. From 1941 to 1945 he worked as the White House liaison to the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, and from 1945 to 1950 he served as the Assistant Press Secretary to President Truman. He was the Special Assistant in the White House Office from 1950 to 1953. Ayers died in Washington, D.C. on February 17, 1977.
