Includes letter of reference for Shepard by H.S. Whitman, president of the Westbrook Seminary (dated 5 Apr. 1897); two issues of "The Messenger," published by the seminary (Nov. 1895 and Oct. 1896); and a cabinet card of Charles Sumner and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1863; written on reverse: "Given by Chas. Sumner to Saml. G. Thurlow Postmaster at Belfast Maine in 1873; presented to Miss Shepherd [sic] by his daughter Mrs. EM Harrison"). The portrait of Sumner and Longfellow is well known in various formats.
